Toronto the Good to finance global green revolution

Alright kids, here's the scoop: Toronto Ontario is about to become the worldwide leader in financing and taking public junior clean power technology companies. Our province has experienced a dreadful energy policy in the past, relying on the twin towers of toxicity, coal and uranium, to power relentless growth and massive wasting of electricity.

The current government has made strides in recent months to understand the high growth nature of our industry, and what is required for Ontario to become and stay a player. Net metering and feed-in tariffs go a long way towards establishing a foundation to support two decades of employment growth.

The next step is cannibalizing these ancient communist-style generating plants (Pickering was built in the 60s using 50s technology, while Darlington was built in the 70s utilizing 60s tech, to say nothing of Bruce and the coal burners) by replacing them with green, renewable power.

In his answer to a question about the government's role as a major shareholder in USA auto companies, President Barack Obama stated:

I am not an auto engineer, and I can't design an affordable, plug-in hybrid automobile, but if Japan can create a hybrid car then doggone it, the American people can do it too. But we're not interested in growing government or staying in for the longterm... as soon as things get better we'll be looking to sell our stakes to private investors.

After opening with an update on the growing swine flu problem, Obama took questions from the media about his first 100 days in office. He gave articulate, even eloquent answers, and as a Canadian I must say it is refreshing to once again have an American President with a solid grasp of the critical issues and an ability to define the most logical proposed solutions.

The Time is Right for Gas-guzzler to Dual-mode EV Conversions

Since early 2008, Axion Power International (AXPW.OB) has been quietly developing an experience base and building grass roots support for a gas-guzzler to dual-mode EV conversion initiative that has the short-term potential to transform up to 120 million gas-guzzling pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans into gas sipping EV-50s. If recent articles from sources as diverse as The Daily Green, Edmunds Green Car Advisorand the Environmental Defense Fund are reliable indicators, the initiative is rapidly gaining ground.

The concept is simple – add electric power trains and battery packs to America's least fuel-efficient vehicles and give them 50 miles of plug-in EV range coupled with unlimited internal combustion range. A few months later, Andrew Grove, the former chairman of Intel, published an article in McKinsey Quarterly titled "An Electric Plan for Energy Resilience" that approached the topic from a slightly different perspective. While Dr. Buiel's testimony focused on using lead-acid batteries and Mr. Grove's article focused on using Li-ion batteries, both men reached the same conclusion: that gas-guzzler to dual-mode EV conversions are the most cost effective baby-steps America can take in its drive for energy independence.

New Green Energy Bubble may take years to burst

Considering that the global credit markets collapse deflated a still-forming alternative energy stocks bubble in 2008, the 80 to 90% drops experienced by quality clean green power companies have set the stage for a multi-year rally in renewable power stocks.

New developments in areas such as thin film solar, concentrated solar, wave energy / tidal power, geothermal energy, flywheels, offshore windpower, the list goes on and on, mean that public and private sector investments will provide increasingly cleaner and more diversified energy generation. It is still early days and for those who have not yet set up dollar cost averaging programs into green power mutuals funds, it is a prudent strategy when included in a portfolio including cash, bonds, and even real estate! One great rule of thumb that is an excellent starting place is to utilize your age for the perecentage of assets to be held in cash and government bonds. A 30 year old would have just 30% in these shorter term securities, while a 70 year old finds that over 2/3 of her portfolio will always be secure, if proper rebalancing occurs. If the past year hasn't taught people the importance of rebalancing to lock-in gains, then they are probably not ready to re-invest in battered equity markets to restore the growth portions of their portfolios now. Many will compound the error of not rebalancing before, by not rebalancing now. A very conservative investor should add 15 or 20% to their age, while a more growth oriented longer term investor may want to subtract 10 or 15 years from her age percentage, with the subsequent higher risk / higher reward profile.

My initial prognosis (formed a decade ago when many names were still vencap) that the publicly-traded clean power stocks would top out in 2008/2009 was hastened and deepened by the world financial crunch, so rather than facing a 3 to 4 year rally, we are likely looking at a post-Bush rally in global equity markets that may last 5 to 7 years. Many PV solar and wind energy companies are dirt cheap nowadays, and they and other green power stocks will provide torque to global equity funds for most of the next decade.

Most clean energy investors are looking for the pure play, the renewable power stock with the potential to be a ten-bagger or more. The top pure alternative energy stocks include First Solar (photovoltaic thin film solar energy), Vestas (top global wind power company) and Ormat Tech (leading geothermal energy stock), but here are some ways to play the global stock market post-Bush rally with more diversified companies that have a strong clean energy component:

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE)

One of the world's biggest companies, GE has seen its market cap fall from $400 billion to 100 bil as its stock plummeted from 38.52 to the current 9.54. General Electric is leading global player in both solar power and wind energy and is also a force in water purification and water desalination technology. The prevailing global doom and gloom means you can pick up shares in this behemoth at only 5.3 times trailing earnings, and their GE Energy division keeps you in the clean power game.

And the yield is 13%!!!

Kaydon Corporation (NYSE:KDN)

If you read KDN's description on Google Finance, you'll learn their products include bearing systems and components, and filters and filter housings, as well as custom rings, shaft seals, linear deceleration products, specialty balls, fuel cleansing systems, gas-phase air filtration systems and replacement media, industrial presses and metal alloy products.

What's not so easy to ascertain is that Kaydon is a major supplier of ball bearings and other components to the wind turbine industry. If you believe windpower has plenty of growth potential on land and offshore, KDN is worth considering for your portfolio.

At Friday's close of 26.54, the stock is less than half its 52 week high of 61.57, trades at a PE of 12.97 and yields 2.5%.

American Superconductor Corp (NASDAQ:AMSC)

Although AMSC is highly leveraged to the wind energy industry, their leading edge programmable power electronic converters and high temperature superconductor (HTS) wires allow them to sell their products to both wind farm developers / operators and to electric utilities in general. A recent sale of their dSVC technology to California utility Southern California Edison (SCE) included this in the press release:

AMSC's dSVC allows electric utilities to optimize power delivery directly at the grid's critical load-serving points by automatically adjusting the reactive power supply in real time to meet their customers' ever-changing electricity demands.

I believe that bodes well for the future, and means that AMSC will likely be working with electricity grid productivity firms such as Comverge (NASDAQ:COMV) and Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ:ELON) .

At 15.48 (down from $47), this high growth technology stock has tremendous blue sky potential.

Over time, the greatest risk in equity markets has always been investing too big a share of your investment portfolio too near to the top. Dollar cost averaging programs can fare much better, and when these programs are initiated after steep declines, they always provide good returns over the long term.

On the Tuesday March 3rd edition of ABC World News USA President Obama was quoted as saying:

"Profit and earning ratios are starting to get to the point where buying stocks is a potentially good deal, if you've got a long-term perspective on it."

If you believe in the United States of America you really gotta love this guy, as he embodies equal parts intelligence and common sense. It's far too early to comment on his wisdom, but he definitely has the tools to perform well and help America recover at home and abroad.

Will Google (GOOG) take a bite of First Solar (FSLR)?

First Solar has long been touted as the Google of the photovoltaic solar energy industry. Their pioneering thin film PV solar power technology solution is produced faster and cheaper than most competitors, and sales have grown exponentially. It makes sense now for Google to acquire 5 to 10% of FSLR. Why?

Let me count the ways!

1. What's the point of having a massive cash hoard if you can't pick up some clever pieces when there's a fire sale on? The stock is down over 60% in the Bush crash but will be a primary beneficiary of the Obama reign. 10% of First Solar might go for about US$1 billion, as the current market cap is nine and change.

2. With 17bil in cash and prospects for exponential growth dimmed by widespread financial weakness, utilizing investor capital for strategic equity alliances in high growth situations may be a great antidote. Sure Google will be THE NUMBER ONE beneficiary of a global economic upturn that has all boats rising, but when will that day or month come? Even when it does, the sheer size of GOOG means that it will face similar problems that Microsoft has faced for years, and that is trying to maintain reasonably steady growth while managing expectations, in a mega cap reality. Looking at FSLR, ORA, Suzlon, Vesta etc would make perfect sense for Google.

3. Time to leapfrog the charity and make some real money! It's all fine and dandy that Google.org wants to save the world with its crucial and pioneering work. Still, it befuddled that promising clean energy investments seemed to be owned by the foundation, and it hasn't been clear to me (I haven't researched it so readers are welcome to comment) that the Google shareholders would even be rewarded in the future from this beneficence today.

Now I understand how a company can benefit from having more PHDs than NASA; GOOG saw the crash coming and didn't want to get flack from shareholders for buying into a future dream at the top. In this next phase loans, grants and investments can still come from the foundation, but with the equity portion it will be better to structure these deals as Google Inc. owning 80-90% of the new green energy equity investments, the foundation 10-20%. The non-for-proft arm, which battles global climate change, world poverty and 21st century emerging diseases. and the company will both grow faster due to the sharing of resources and pooling of capital in strategic situations.

4. Lots of high quality alternative energy companies are currently attractive to longer term investors. Here are some names a cash-rich company like Google (or even MSFT (14 bil cash), or AAPL (20+ bil cash) may want to speak with:

Democratic Presidents and Unified House / Senate deliver best stock market returns

After living through the disatrous Bush era and remembering the Clinton era vividly (I spent most of it with Altamira), I was wondering if this outperformance of Democratic Presidents existed in history. The research predates the current collapse and the trend not only exists, but persists.

From The Democratic Dividend by Slate's Carol Vivant:

But Democrats, it turns out, are much better for the stock market than Republicans. Slate ran the numbers and found that since 1900, Democratic presidents have produced a 12.3 percent annual total return on the S&P 500, but Republicans only an 8 percent return. In 2000, the Stock Trader's Almanac, which slices and dices Wall Street performance figures like baseball stats, came up with nearly the same numbers (13.4 percent versus 8.1 percent) by measuring Dow price appreciation. (Most of the 20th century's bear markets, incidentally, have been Republican bear markets: the Crash of '29, the early '70s oil shock, the '87 correction, and the current stall occurred under GOP presidents.)

Nor does having a Republican Congress help the market. A Democratic Senate showed returns of 10.5 percent (versus 9.4 percent for a GOP upper chamber), and a Democratic House returned 10.9 percent versus 8.1 percent for the Republicans.

When both houses of Congress opposed the president, the return was a stellar 12.9 percent. Libertarians may celebrate this as proof that the market likes gridlock and government inaction. But the market likes steamrollers nearly as much: The S&P performs almost as well—returning 11.8 percent—when the presidency and both houses are held by the same party. The only situation Mr. Market dislikes is what we have now: one house for each party. Those years have a -0.9 percent return.

Republicans are no doubt muttering that that's just the stock market, not the whole economy. But real GDP growth follows the same pattern. Since 1930 (the first year decent data is available), GDP growth was 5.4 percent for Democratic presidents and 1.6 percent for Republicans.

Considering that the Dow is lower than it was when Bush took office, and now testing the 2004 lows, one can make an extremely strong case for an equity bull market during the first term of President Obama. What's left in 2008 is the November month-end rally, some but not a lot (who has profits to offset??) of tax loss selling the first third of December, followed by year end and early January portfolio rebablancing rallies.

Then it's inauguration time and after that we'll see if investors begin to once again have faith in stocks and America. My guess is that they will.

Some pioneers will make it well before then, and will streak to new highs in the winter of 2009. One place to look for these is in stocks that have resisted downside volatility in recent days and begun to establish a nascent uptrend. The top wind power company in the world, VWS has over 30% market share and can charge a premium for its reliable products. With the shares at 325 DKK, down from 700, longterm investors may want to research this one. One of the greatest companies on earth, at 27.6x earnings; look for VWS to continue to be a global wind energy industry leader for years to come.

CLIPPER WIND REG S (CWP.L)

Top UK wind turbine manufacturer and windfarm developer, one would hope that Clipper will be a major force in the UK energy industry for decades to come. Battered by the global credit markets panic, the stock has nosedived from 753.80 p to today's (16oct08) close of 165 p. Though the company has posted rising losses, revenues are growing even faster, and Clipper will likely come to be seen as a solid turnaround candidate, a quality UK growth company, and a bargain green energy stock.

Kaydon Corporation (NYSE:KDN)

KDN is a major supplier of bearings to the wind power industry, and sells its products to customers in a variety of robotics technology, medical instruments, materials handling, machine tools, aerospace, defense, alternative energy, security, electronic industries and for other industrial applications. Kaydon has been volatile in recent days, trading between 32 and 40 and closing today at 35.77, still far from the years high of 61.57. The shares yield 1.9% and trade at a PE of 14.89, and though not a pure renewable power play, represents attractive exposure to wind energy industry growth.

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC)

The good news keeps coming for American Superconductor, who won another wind energy contract this week, with AMSC licensing its windpower technology to Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. At 14.96, the shares are way off frpom their high of 47.53.

Canadian Hydro Developers (TSE:KHD)

KDN is a major player in Canadian wind enegy and small-scale hydropower, and at 3.05, the stock is down from a high of 8.01. A growing renewable power company with earnings and rising revenues.

This May, 2008 DOE Report Analyzes U.S. Wind Energy Resources, Wind Power Technology Requirements, and Wind Turbine Manufacturing, Wind Farm Siting and Power Project Transmission Hurdles to Increasing the Use of Clean and Sustainable Wind Power

Department of Energy (DOE) report finds a 20% wind contribution to U.S. electricity supply would:

Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation by 25 percent in 2030.

Reduce CO2 in real terms by 7.6 gigatons through 2030 and 825 million metric tons each year after that

Reduce natural gas use by 11%;

Reduce water consumption associated with electricity generation by 4 trillion gallons by 2030;

Increase annual revenues to local communities to more than $1.5 billion by 2030; and

Support roughly 500,000 jobs in the U.S., with an average of more than 150,000 workers directly employed by the wind industry.

To achieve 20%, wind turbines would have to produce 300,000 megawatts of power, compared to today's generated 16,000 megawatts.

The analysis concludes that reaching 20 percent wind energy will require enhanced transmission infrastructure, streamlined siting and permitting regimes, improved reliability and operability of wind systems, and increased U.S. wind manufacturing capacity.

Highlights of the report include:

Annual installations need to increase more than threefold. Achieving 20 percent wind will require the number of annual turbine installations to increase from approximately 2000 in 2006 to almost 7000 in 2017.

Costs of integrating intermittent wind power into the grid are modest. 20 percent wind can be reliably integrated into the grid for less than 0.5 cents per kWh.

No material constraints currently exist. Although demand for copper, fiberglass and other raw materials will increase, achieving 20 percent wind is not limited by the availability of raw materials.

Transmission challenges need to be addressed. Issues related to siting and cost allocation of new transmission lines to access the Nation’s best wind resources will need to be resolved in order to achieve 20 percent wind.

“The report correctly highlights that greater penetration of renewable sources of energy - such as wind - into our electric grid will have to be paired with not only advanced integration technologies but also new transmission,” DOE’s Assistant Secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Kevin Kolevar said. “In many cases, the most robust sources of renewable resources are located in remote areas, and if we want to be able to deliver these new clean and abundant sources of energy to population centers, we will need additional transmission.”

With the U.S. leading the world in new wind installations and having the potential to be the world leader in total wind capacity by 2010, DOE’s report comes at an important time in wind development.

Last year, U.S. cumulative wind energy capacity reached 16,818 megawatts (MW) – with more than 5,000 MW of wind installed in 2007. Wind contributed to more than 30 percent of the new U.S. generation capacity in 2007, making it the second largest source of new power generation in the nation --- surpassed only by natural gas. The U.S. wind energy industry invested approximately $9 billion in new generating capacity in 2007, and has experienced a 30 percent annual growth rate in the last 5 years.

Green Investment Funds for 2009 and beyond

For long term growth investors with cash on the side, or decent cash flow, dollar-cost-averaging into well managed, diversified high growth funds is something to seriously consider. An ecomic slowdown may mean that FSLR grows at 25% instead of 40%, but in most scenarios pure power producers and clean energy technology companies should be among the next bull market's leaders.

Though there is some risk in bottom fishing for mutual funds, it is dramatically minimzed relative to individual stock investing. A single firm's shares may be down because the company is in serious trouble and the stock is on its way to zero, but green energy mutual funds and clean power exchange traded funds (ETFs) are down because of market and sector comnditions, and over time will reflect the longer term potential of the sector and economy at large. With many clean power funds down 40% to 50% and more this is an opportune time for aggressive longterm investors to buy, and for medium risk longterm investors to start dollar-cost averaging into alternative energy and clean renewable power funds.

Down 50% to $10.06, a diversified portfolio of small, medium and large-sized Canadian companies wich fit the Fund's environmental concept of sustainable development.

Calvert Global Alternative Energy Fund A (CGAEX)

CGAEX invests in equity securities of U.S. and non-U.S. companies whose main business is alternative energy or are significantly involved in the alternative energy sector. At 8.33, the fund holds Vestas, FSLR, Gamesa and other global clean energy industry leaders.

Claymore/MAC Global Solar Index (TAN)

Worldwide solar power index fund; now at 11.29, the shares had earlier hit a high of 30.79.

First Trust Global Wind Energy (FAN)

At 13.48, the fund is designed to track the performance of ISE Global Wind Energy Index. The year's high was 31.50.

First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge US (QCLN)

Guinness Atkinson Alternative (GAAEX) Energy

Normally invests at least 80% of assets in equity securities of (both U.S. and non-U.S.) companies involved in the alternative energy or energy technology sectors. At 6.55, the shares are down about 60% from a high around $17.

Market Vectors Global Alternative Energy ETF (GEX) Trust

At 24.74, down from 62; GEX was formerly a Van Eck Fund. Seeks to replicate as performance of the Ardour Global Index (Extra Liquid) (AGIXL) by investing in common shares of reflected in the Index which is composed primarily of publicly traded companies engaged in the production of alternative fuels and technology related to the production of clean energy and renewable power.

New Alternatives (NALFX) Fund

The fund invests mostly in companies that contribute to a clean and sustainable environment. It usually invests at least 25% of assets in common shares of companies which have an interest in alternative energy. $29.51

Powershares Cleantech (PZD) Portfolio

The 52 week high is 38.02; after this week's record stock market carnage, the shares are now at 17.98.

PowerShares Global Clean Energy (PBD) Portfolio

PowerShares Global Clean Energy Portfolio is based on the WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index. The Index seeks to deliver capital appreciation and is composed of companies that focus on greener and generally renewable sources of energy and technologies facilitating cleaner energy. THE 3 Top Green Energy Stocks to Consider Buying Now

Investing directly in growth stocks is a high risk activity; medium risk investors should consider acquiring positions in clean energy mutual funds, as these eliminate most individual stock risk and allow investors to benefit from the sector trend.

The near term risk in the clean power sector is continued downward pressure on oil prices, although somewhere in the fall from the current $93 to an estimated $70 a year from now, the sectors will decouple and green stocks will resume their long-term uptrend. Dollar-cost averaging into renewable power stock funds over the next 6 to 9 months would be very prudent, and the more adventurous may want to wade in over the next 3 to 5 months.

If you are a long term equity investor with a time horizon of 5 to 10 years or longer, consult your investment advisor about adding some of these names to your growth stock portfolio:

First Solar (FSLR)

Normally I find this solar energy market leader a bit pricey, but the past few months of downside volatility in USA and global financial markets have really taken the stuffing out of this industry leader. First Solar is considered the Google of the renewable power sector, in that it is by far the dominant player in the global solar photovoltaics industry. Its patented cadmium telluride thin-film solar technology allows FSLR to produce solar panels and modules more inexpensively than competitors, and this advantage has been translated into a healthy global market share. Although there are concerns about the availability of enough tellurium to meet future demand, my feeling is that FSLR has the financial muscle and wherewithal to scare up what it needs, and likely has future versions of its technology in development that require even less tellurium. Clearly overpriced at its 52-week high of $317, today's (03OCT08) close of 163.19 makes me want to revisit this one. Trading at about 44x estimated 2008 earnings and only 23.4x next year's forecasted earnings, there is still risk to be had but solar energy is here to stay and First Solar is the first mover.

Ormat Technologies (ORA)

The world leader in geothermal energy and remote power, Ormat designs, develops, builds, owns and operates geothermal recovered energy-based power plants, usually using equipment that it designs and manufactures. Not as widely known as First Solar, this is exactly the type of quality American company that will benefit under the wise leadership of Barack Obama over the next eight years. When the Obama rally is in full swing, this stock will likely already be much higher than its current price of $31.40 and on the way to surpassing its year high of 57.93. Trading now at just 27.4 times earnings, it may be a long time before you'll see another opportunity to acquire Ormat at these multiples.

Vestas Wind Systems (VWS.CO)

Down from a high of 700 DKK (Danish Kroners), Vestas at 468DKK (up 47 or 11.1% today!) is a blue-green chip investment for the ages. With over 30% of the growing global wind power market, Vestas gets a premium for its high quality wind turbines and is the Mercedes Benz of the wind energy industry. At 39.8 times earnings, conservative investors may find this company still expensive, but there's a price to pay for greatness, and the time to load up on great firms is when there's blood in the streets. Probably the highest quality company in the entire green energy investing sector, it's time to take a look at Vestas.

Investing Bargain of the Decade; Clean Energy Mutual Funds

The slide in oil prices combined with the downside volatility of the stock market in recent weeks has created an extraordinary investment opportunity for long term investors: clean green power funds, renewable energy investment funds, exchange-traded alternative energy funds and other diversified green stock funds. Due to energy security and global warming concerns, these stocks will be in big demand over the next five years, and it is much safer to buy a widely diversified stock fund, even a sector fund, than it is to buy individual stocks.

A single company's share price may be down because the firm is in trouble and the shares are on their way to zero, but green mutual funds and clean energy closed-end funds are down because of market and sector comnditions, and over time will reflect the longer term potential of the sector and economy at large. With many clean power funds down 30% to 40% now is the time for aggressive investors to buy, and for medium risk investors to begin dollar-cost averavging into these alternative enrgy funds.
